Horses and Horsemanship at Waterfall Creek
Waterfall Creek is a place for horses. Horses here live a life that generously meets their needs. We see horses as dignified, beautiful and fun loving creatures. Our 'horse journey' has been a steep but enjoyable learning curve. We often find that by looking beyond traditional approaches to horses, horse keeping and horsemanship we have been able to learn more appropriate things about horses and give the horses a healthy lifestyle, both physically and emotionally. The other side of this journey has been an opportunity for self discovery.
Our horsemanship is based on what is popularly known as natural horsemanship, although we fully recognise that there is very little that is natural about human/horse relationships.
We like to call what we do "Good, Ethical or Harmonious Horsemanship" and keep an open mind. We are strong advocates of herd living, barehoof and bitless horses.
Our aim is to have a relationship with the horse that treats them as companions, partners and friends. We do not compete but sometimes do ask our horses to carry us on their backs for our pleasure.
Glenn is a qualified barehoof trimmer caring for horses whose owners really care. He began his horse journey, as a latecomer, with pleasure harness driving. In 2003 he learnt to ride his harness horse Katie and journeyed into the high country for the first of many trips. A few years ago Katie assisted Glenn with another first, breeding Macgregor, a Percheron/Standardbred cross. Glenn started Macgregor himself, both under saddle and in harness, at the age of four. Glenn is passionate about meeting horses needs, bitless and barehoof.
Kelly began her journey with horses as a 9 year old, attending the local pony club. In the last few years she has shifted her focus to gentle and compassionate horsemanship techniques. Kelly is a handy and competent barehoof trimmer too. On Christmas night 2010, she became the proud custodian of Tilly, a Standardbred/Clydie filly whose mum is Katie. Tilly is a 'blank canvas' for Kelly and is testimony to her gentle imprinting and soft handling.
Waterfall Creek is for the horses. We have much to learn from these wonderful creatures. They show us complete honesty, they show us real forgiveness and they show us how to live in the moment.
