Float Safe Driver Training Program

The safe transporting of our horses is vitally important.

Driving a motor vehicle is a complex and demanding activity.  The complexity and demands increase substantially when towing a horse float with up to 1200 kilograms of horses on board.  

For many untrained and unskilled towing drivers, safe arrival is a matter of good luck - not good management or good training.  To overcome this skill shortfall, the Float Safe driver training course is now available for horse people who wish to transport their horses as safely as possible.

Float Safe is a four hour structured, intensive driver training program that covers:

• Towing Overview: The Law,  Dynamic physics of towing, Loads & Weight, Safe float, Safe vehicle, Safe driver, Safe driving techniques, Distractions, State of mind, Fatigue & stress.
• Float Inspection.  Float condition and maintenance.  Is it suitable for horses?  Is it suitable for towing?  Coupling, Safety chains, Tow ball, Brakes, Suspension, Tyres, Bearings, Electrics, Storage.  Is it registered and roadworthy?
• Towing vehicle condition and maintenance.  Is it suitable?  Is it legal?
• Pre Flight Check, Float and vehicle
• Driving posture.
• Driving into trouble.  Prac & theory  (reactive)
• Collision Avoidance  Combination of the proactive and defensive driving techniques
• Consider the Horse in an emergency.  Do you put it down in the float and avoid a collision?
• Reversing for Hitching up. Reversing and parking, Use of mirrors,     
• Steering techniques. 
• Pre Takeoff check
• Steering Smoothly
• Accelerating  Manual & Auto.  Economy
• Smooth Braking  and distances/speed
• Combination of all vehicle handling skills
• Driving out of trouble  Prac and theory  (proactive)
• Avoiding trouble          Proactive.  Look up and live
• Stay Back  3 second rule
• Emergency Braking

Your Float Safe trainer, Glenn Wilson, has many decades of safe driving experience.  He has driven furniture removal vans, coaches in the snowfields, fire trucks, tip trucks, heavy machinery floats, and many thousands of kilometres towing horses.  His background includes training and assessing ultralight aircraft pilots as a chief flying instructor, a workplace trainer and assessor, ski instructor and a general aviation licence holder. 

Glenn has combined these skills and experience to offer the Float Safe driver training program for all horse owners.
